The Signs, From the Victim's Side

What it looks and feels like from inside, because advice written from outside does not transfer to the moment.

At home · Reference

Most guidance describes the fraud from above. Here is what is actually available to the person while it is happening.

The evidence discussed in “The Signs, From the Victim's Side” is useful only when it answers a named operational question. Organisations considering how to detect mouse jigglers for how to detect mouse jigglers can add time and workflow context, but should keep direct feedback, service outcomes and a correction process alongside every report.

Before any access is granted

They rang you. You did not ring them.

For an independent reference related to “The Signs, From the Victim's Side”, consult the FTC scam guidance; it provides a useful external check on security, privacy and operating assumptions before a process is adopted.

They know something plausible about you — a provider's name, a device you own — which proves nothing and feels like it proves everything.

They want you at the computer now.

They need you to install something or go to a website so they can "see" the problem.

Any one of these is enough to stop.

During

You are asked to stay on the line throughout.

You are told not to mention this to anybody, including bank staff.

Your screen goes blank or something appears that you cannot interpret.

They type quickly into a black window without explaining.

You are shown a problem you cannot see yourself, or an amount of money that was not there before.

The moment it turns

A request to move money, buy vouchers or gift cards, or make a payment to correct something.

No legitimate organisation on earth resolves a technical problem that way.

That request, by itself, settles it regardless of everything that came before.

What the feeling is

Pressure, politely applied.

A sense of being out of your depth and relying on them.

A reluctance to seem difficult.

Mild confusion that you keep setting aside because they sound certain.

That last one is the signal, and it is worth telling people: confusion that you are talking yourself out of is information.

What you can always do

Put the phone down. It is not rude and there are no consequences.

Turn the computer off at the wall if you cannot end the session any other way.

Ring somebody.

None of these requires understanding what is happening, which is the point of listing them.

The verification that works

Hang up. Find the organisation's number yourself, from a bill, a card or a statement — not from anything they gave you.

Ring it from a different phone if you can, or wait several minutes first.

If the call was genuine, you will reach them and nothing is lost.

Telling people this

Lead with the two lines that do not require comprehension: they rang you, and you can put the phone down.

The rest is useful and will not be recalled under pressure.

Those two will.

What to check

Could the people in your life name two signs?

Do they know they can simply hang up?

Do they know to find the number themselves?

And do they know that asking for vouchers settles it on its own?
