Pooling Agreements

Topics:

The FCC just announced that:

“As a result of the fluid and challenging nature of covering the outbreak of respiratory illness caused by a novel coronavirus (COVID-19), we understand that broadcast stations may be engaging in the sharing of news and news gathering resources in order to cover the emergency news event. These agreements may be impromptu oral agreements of a temporary nature. We take the opportunity to clarify that any such temporary, shared news gathering efforts that occur over the duration of this emergency news event and that are a related to news coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic need not be reduced to writing and placed in the stations’ online public inspection file.”

A guide to taking care of yourself and your newsroom in times of coronavirus

Topics:

The coronavirus pandemic threw a ginormous flaming curveball at the news media industry, from turning newsrooms remote to eviscerating whole streams of revenue. It’s really easy to panic when you don’t know what the next day or even the next hour will bring, much less how to plan for it.

As the outbreak worsened, journalists in the Journalists of Color Slack channel started talking about their anxieties and decided they wanted to jump into action to help their colleagues, from freelance reporters to editors and managers.

Maryland Passes Digital Ad Tax

Topics:

Wendy Davis, DigitalNewsDaily

Facebook, Google and other online companies could face new taxes in Maryland, if a bill passed this week is signed by the governor.

The measure, SB2, would impose new taxes on companies that glean than $100 million in digital ad revenue. Rates would vary from 2.5% to 10% of revenue attributable to Maryland, with the percentage tied to global revenue: Companies taking in between $100 million and $1 billion in digital ad revenue globally would be taxed at the 2.5% rate, while those taking in more than $15 billion would be assessed at the 10% rate.

NAB added new downloadable COVID-19 public service announcements Thursday. The PSAs are available in both English and Spanish, and scripts are available to stations who want their own talent to read the information.

Additionally, the toolkit features editorial guidelines, including lists of trusted resources and social media accounts to ensure stations point listeners in the right direction for COVID-19 information.

COVID-19 Joint Information Center Conference Call

Topics:

Hello NASBA Family,

I hope all of you are healthy and safe. I am just hopping off a daily Joint Information Center conference call and wanted to share and see if any of you are members of your state’s joint information teams. The team consist of EVERY state agency, including the Governor’s office, hospitals, and us (the communicators). This truly gives us an insiders perspective of emergency planning in response to COVID-19 and gives us a seat at the table to share ideas on communicating information to the public.

I was invited by our state’s emergency management agency.

I believe this to be a tremendous testament to our role in emergencies and a benefit to our members as we can share with them the latest. The agencies have asked that we share the information with our members to help ensure a consistent message.

Happy to discuss further and sorry if it doesn’t make complete sense. Trying my best to multi task and probably not doing the best job.

Stay healthy.
